BloombergNEF anticipates that by 2035, data centers will quadruple their energy consumption, with 64% of global AI capabilities concentrated in the U.S.

By 2035, data centers are projected to consume approximately 20% of all electricity generated in the U.S.—four times the current amount. This forecast was presented by the analytical firm BloombergNEF. According to their assessment, the total capacity of data centers over the next decade will approach 200 GW, with nearly half of this capacity allocated for training and operating artificial intelligence models. By 2033, the U.S. is expected to account for 64% of global AI computing, when measured by energy consumption.

Furthermore, BloombergNEF has already significantly revised its estimates: the new electricity consumption forecast for 2035 is 83% higher than the one provided in December.

Similar trends are being recorded by other organizations. The non-profit industry institute EPRI (Electric Power Research Institute) has more than doubled its forecast published in 2024, while S&P Global has raised its estimate by over a third within the period from October to April. The rapid construction of new data centers is cited as the reason.

Most new facilities will connect to power grids that are already under significant strain. In the PJM Interconnection energy system, which serves the area from Virginia to Illinois, data centers are expected to account for 34% of electricity consumption by the next decade, while in the ERCOT energy system, covering much of Texas, they will represent 22% of generating capacity. PJM has already suspended the acceptance of new connection applications for four years, and electricity prices in the region have risen by 76% over the past year.

The increase will not be limited to the U.S. According to BloombergNEF, with the active spread of artificial intelligence, data centers will generate an additional global demand of 1935 TWh of electricity annually by 2033—almost as much as the total annual consumption of India today.
